Q. What does the term “pinch effect” mean in relation to an active mattress?

Active mattresses often use 20 or so large active air cells to support the patient. When such a mattress is profiled on an adjustable bed frame it can result in the patient sitting on just two large cells, the other’s having deflated underneath them as part of the inflation cycle. When the later cells are re inflated (a perpetual process) the patient’s sacrum can be pinched.

In response to this challenge; the Squirrel Medical™ design team created a 58-cell mattress known as the Squirrel Diamond. This patented and innovative system has been designed specifically to work with profiling adjustable beds. Due to its composition, most patients will find themselves being supported at all phases of the alternating cycle.
